This beautiful walking stick is hand turned from Cocobola, a species of Rosewood. The shaft has 3 sets of “beads” decorating the top portion of the stick. The MH doorknob is known as an emblematic and is solid b
rass. The doorknob has been shined to restore its luster and has a character mark at the 5 O’clock position from its many years of use. All walking sticks custom made by W.E. Slay have a small “S” on the collar of the shaft known as the makers mark, to authenticate that it is one of his. All of W.E.’s sticks are made with a brass ferrule and rubber inset tip on the bottom of the shaft, as these pieces are not meant to be sized. This unique walking stick stands 35.5″ in height and is truly one of a kind.

This beautiful walking stick is hand turned from Cocobola, a species of Rosewood. The central feature of this walking stick is the battlefield dug Confederate Infantry coat button set in its top. The solid brass button has been gold plated. Overall length of the stick is approximately 35 inches.
This much is known about the history of this button, it was dug on private property, with the owners permission on the Confederate retreat route away from Petersburg, Virginia in late March of 1865. Union General Ulysses Grant had so stretched General Lee’s Confederate lines in the defense of Richmond that General Lee, realizing that he would soon lose his resupply route, ordered the retreat from Richmond along Woodpecker and River roads, the last two open roads away from Petersburg. The soldier wearing this button was involved in this last march and may well have survived the war.
